| Sacred Heart Parish History

1885 – Church built on ground purchased from Abraham Hoke for $1.00.
1st Sunday of August, 1901 – First Mass celebrated in Spring Grove at the home of Mr. & Mrs. William Allen on Railroad St. Celebrant was Fr. Homan of St. Patrick’s in York.
1903 – Present church purchased from the Reformed Congregation. Church consisted of a square room with a balcony and plain glass windows with white shutters. It was heated by two stoves and had no cellar.
Religious instruction for children began in 1903 and was held once a week during the school year.
1904 – First Holy Communion, the first Forty Hours Devotions, and the Sacrament of Confirmation were held in the church for the first time.
May 8, 1904 – Dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Littlestown Parish donated the first pipe organ. Mass offered by Fr. Samuel Milner, St. Patrick’s, York.
August, 1904 – Fr. William Boyle appointed first pastor. Lived at the Aldine Hotel until 1907. Then moved to St. Mary’s rectory in Abbottstown. Parish also served by Fr. John O’Donnell of St. Mary’s.
January 1906 – First Nuptial Mass was celebrated.
1906 – Church was equipped with electricity, side altars and statues, and an altar.
1909 – Sacred Heart becomes a mission of St. Patrick’s, York.
1911 – Sacred Heart is made a mission of St. Mary’s under the direction of the Capuchin Franciscans. These priests included Fr. Benignus Brennan, O.S.C.F., Fr. Leonard Brophy, O.S.C.F., and Fr. John Butler, O.S.C.F.
1918-19 – Stained glass windows replaced the plain glass windows at a cost of $30 per window.
1931 – Our parish becomes a mission of St. Rose of Lima under the care of Fr. Howard Howarth.
1935 – Present organ installed. It came from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Spring Grove.
1946 – Sacred Heart now comes under care of St. Francis Preparatory School and Fr. Francis McKinney, T.O.R. is first Franciscan pastor.
1949 – Fr. Marianna Leib, T.O.R. becomes pastor.
1952 – Fr. Edmond Joyce, T.O.R becomes pastor.
1956 – Fr. Donald Vuketich, T.O.R. becomes pastor.
1959 – Fr. William Schrader, T.O.R. becomes pastor.
1959 – Fr. Edmond Joyce, T.O.R. returns.
1972 – Fr. Killian Shuman, T.O.R. is pastor.
1974 – Fr. Kenneth Flaherty, T.O.R. is pastor. Rectory is purchased.
1975 – Fr. James Joyce, T.O.R. is made pastor. Church's interor was renovated.
October 1975 – The newly formed Parish Advisory Council held its first meeting.
February 1, 1979 – Fr. Robert Kelly, T.O.R becomes pastor.
November 25, 1976 – Thanksgiving Day – Sacred Heart Church is raised to the status of parish by the Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg. Most Rev. Joseph T. Daley signs the canonical decree.
March 23, 1977 – Public recital on newly renovated organ.
August 1977 – Restoration of the church's exterior.
1978 – The Diocese of Harrisburg purchased 10-acres of land along Hershey Road and Route 116 with the intention of future development.
November 9, 1978 – Church sanctuary renovated for the second anniversary of being raised to a parish.
March, 1980 – Stations of the Cross restored by local artist, Sherry Hoover.
August 2, 1981 – Ground-breaking for parish center on Hershey Road officiated by Most Rev. William H. Keeler, Bishop of Harrisburg.
January, 1982 – 103-year organ restored.
September 12, 1982 – Parish Center of Sacred Heart Church dedicated.
May 30, 1984 – Fr. Gervase Cain, T.O.R. becomes our pastor.
April 9, 1985 – Fr, Ronald Bodenschatz, T.O.R. becomes our pastor.
June, 1990 – Fr. Nathan Preuss, T.O.R. becomes our temporary administrator.
August, 1990 – Fr. Peter Lyons, T.O.R. becomes our permanent pastor.
June 26, 1992 – Fr. Earl Jennings, T.O.R. becomes pastor – last Franciscan to be pastor.
June 28, 1995 – Fr. Hugh J. McLaughlin becomes our pastor. Parish returned to the care of diocesan priests.
May, 1996 – Final payment made on the Parish Center mortgage.
January, 1997 – Church is re-painted and altar candle-holders are refurbished.
December 7, 2003 – Parish adopts St. Chistopher Church Hispanic Mission, Sand Hill, Georgia.
September, 2004 – In a cooperative effort to fight off hunger, "Harvest of Hope" food pantry is opened.
August 7, 2005 - Fr. McLaughlin goes home to his Heavenly Father.
October 20, 2005 – Fr. Thomas Marickovic installed as our pastor.
